The "NEW" MOT
Thought better to start a new thread than confuse even more one that Slaphead started

I'm worried about future MOTs. If the garage fail it and you can't take it to your favorite workshop, they have you over a barrel. Two firms in particular are bad enough at the moment, goodness knows what they will be like when the new rules come in.
No prizes for guessing who I mean. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Thanks David.
Galling isn't it, to see diesels being targeted so obviously after many years of successive governments encouraging people to buy diesel vehicles in preference to petrol power.

Re: The "NEW" MOT
The new MOT smoke emissions rules only affect vehicles first registered after 1 July 2008. Before that date old rules apply.
The change being if the VIN plate has a manufacturer's exhaust limit shown that is the figure that must not be exceeded (a number in a square box). If not, then old values apply, except for EuroVI engines where a reduced value applies. If fitted with DPF no visible smoke is allowed.
Section 8.4.1 of new manual shows it all [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I don't quite see things the way they are presented in that article.
Perhaps some people will be deprived of the opportunity to spend a few weeks driving their unroadworthy vehicles around until their 12 months is up, but is that a bad thing?
Earlier today I had the unpleasant experience of following a taxi cab for a few miles, and it was quite clear from the black fumes spewing out the back whenever he hit the throttle that it was not fit to be driven on the public roads. I can still smell nothing but diesel several hours later.
If the new rules mean that people like him have to fix their vehicles a few weeks earlier than under the previous rules, I'm all for the new rules.

Couldn't agree more Mojo.
Poorly maintained diesels are a scurge, and there's no excuse - specially from a taxi driver who should be expected to service his vehicle better than most, as it's his livelihood.
I just feel a bit annoyed now that diesels in general are vilified and blamed for everything atmospherically bad, when until only a couple of years ago they were the best thing since sliced bread!

Re: The "NEW" MOT
When I bought the Celex it simply wasn't possible to buy anything other than diesel if you wanted something based on the T5. VW made them in petrol (and even sold a few of the V6 engined ones as Caravelles in the UK) but the camper van base vehicle was diesel only for the UK market.
And that continued right up until last year, when VW decided that they were going to have trouble selling any camper van base vehicles at all in the UK unless they changed policy.
So yes, it's galling to be told that you only have one choice, and then to be told that you made the wrong choice.
I guess the only consolation is that in years to come there will be a reserve of excellent long-lived diesel engine based campers to choose from that (hopefully) no government will dare to retrospectively tax into oblivion - so those who know what to look for will still be able to get value from them.

Realistically, your chances of being caught or fined should this actually happen are approximately 3/8ths of 5/8ths of b88ger all!
