Over 70s driving licence Empty Over 70s driving licence

Post by modelman Fri May 27, 2016 5:15 pm

Just renewed my driving licence on-line, only to find out that there's NO provision for the motorcycle  class, its car only!!!

What have you guys who also ride bikes done??

Tried phoning DVLA, what a joke that was, 20 min of pressing every department button only to find myself back where I started, couldn't find out how to actually TALK to someone!!

GRRRRRR censored!

I have a question that I expect has been asked many times before.

When I get to 70 so_sad will I be allowed to tow a caravan behind my boxer Warwick Duo due to the weight limit?

What class do I need? I passed by test in the 60's and have a car and motorbike class.

I have searched the web and not found the same answer twice!

as you haven't had a reply I will answer to the best of my knowledge - although there are far more knowledgeable people around. I have gleaned my information from a recent thread but I can't remember where to look.

At 70 you will be restricted to vehicles with a taxation class of 3500kg or less. Whatever wehicle you have will also have its own maximum train weight (I think). Provided your vehicle is <3500kg AND the actual weight of your van and trailer together is under the train weight then you can drive. The trailer itself must be under a certain weight but this is dependant upon when you passed your test. Having passed in the 60s gives you unlimited weight, again provided the train weight isn't exceeded.

Is the Train Weight limit not the Actual weights, but the GVW of the van and the MTPLM of the trailer added together? Or do the Actual weights apply?

confused3  No idea. As I understand it the actual weight of loaded vehicle & loaded trailer must be below the maximum permissible train weight but I am acronymed out.

the thread I got my information from was this one. https://www.autosleeper-ownersforum.com/t17720p25-tow-cars#148648

A report to be issued in July is to recommend that renewal of license is extended to 75, which if accepted will put off the hassle for a bit.

it doesn't help me though, I am already on the 3 year licence.

think_smiley_46

but while we are talking about it, my licence lasts for 3 years but the photo is valid for 10 but there is no way of knowing that your photo is out of date. Good planning that.

In that case, I'll probably do the same as you did Mike, when the time comes, just to be sure.
Thanks for the tip-off up!

Panic over!!
The new licence came yesterday & guess what?
All the categories ( inc bike ) were on it except the 7-ton truck which I only ever used a couple of times.
Oh, & it looks like I CAN still drive a road-roller!!

But I feel its a failure on DVLC part to omit it on the forms & website.

That's good news then!
As you say though, there should not be this uncertainty about something which is so very important to us.

Good news.

I bet you get a "how did we do" survey which will only tell them how brilliant they were and no room to make a justifiable complaint.

With the spate of incidents involving elderly drivers, one wonders how long before they force us off the roads at 70, to make room on the roads for all the EU nationals who wish to live here, not to mention all the rest of the world.

Bet they never link the driving licence to pension age, by the time my kids get their pension they will have to present a ' telegram ' from the Queen to get it.

But most of those elderly drivers were well over 70, so selecting an cut-off age, based on potential risk, should involve a much later age than 70/75.

Mr Modelman, were you renewing a paper licence (pre 99) or a new one? the reason I ask is because I still have the old type and that lists motorcycles etc, when I looked on Franks web site all my details are correct. I'm just thinking ahead.
