Aldi smartphone

Anyone got one of the Medion phones that Aldi are selling? 3 year warranty. £89.95 but I can't find any detail as to whether it's 3g or 4g. Googled the model number and it's not listed by Medion. We have two brand new Aldi stores close by as well as one that's been opened several years. The 'old' store has the phones at £89.95 as listed on their website. The two new stores have them reduced from £89.95 to £59.95. My contract phone is due to expire in January so I'm thinking of going 'sim-only' and considering this Aldi phone.

As an aside they also have a 9" tablet for £149.95 - the new stores have them at £99.95. So if anyone is in the market for one of these, try and find a newly opened store.

Can't help directly Paul, but a friend who "knows about these things" has had two Medion computers and he reckons they are perfectly OK.

I don't know if the smart phones would be the same quality, but 60 quid is not a huge lot of money to risk - and if it wasn't as good as you hoped it could still be a useful spare for trips across the Channel.

(It might even be worth getting one anyway, for use with a French SIM card if you didn't want to swap around with your "best" phone.)

Found more info now. It is 4g ready, dual sim. Can't find any reviews except those on the Aldi website which are not good at all but in fairness there are only 5 reviews, one 5* and four 1* (two from same person) so not much use yet.

We have had 2  computers and 2 laptops by Medion, and couldn`t fault them, my son in law is in IT and he bought a computer from Aldi, so we thought if they are good enough for him then they must be ok,

So I can`t see the smart phone not up to standard, as I am not into smart phones cannot say personally, just saying their other products are very good and with 3 year guarantee cannot go wrong.jmho

The spec looks pretty reasonable - not far short of the Motorola Moto G 3rd gen. that I paid £140 for earlier in the year. Problem is that you can't really tell much from comparing specs. I tried to do this - also earlier this year - with medium-sized Android tablets, and you really do need to heed the reviews rather than the specs.

Of course the other factor is whether you ~need~ the performance. Many of the reviews focus a lot on game-playing - so if you don't play games on your phone (I don't) they can be pretty irrelevant...

At £60 I would be tempted, but at £90 I would probably still go for one of the better-known brands. The thing that swung it for me with the Moto G was the fact that it has a better level of waterproofing than your "average" smartphone - mine regularly gets wet just from being in my pocket in the rain while I'm out walking about.

The one thing I dislike about Aldi (and I don't dislike much about them) is their stock control - for things like this (at £59.99) you would have to be pretty lucky IMO to go into one of their branches and actually find one in stock...

Usually this sort of product is on show in a locked cabinet but we went into a new store last Saturday and it had only been open two days. These phones weren't due in stores until Sunday but they must have had over 100 stacked in an open basket enabling me to actually look at it. That's when I couldn't find out if it was 4g. Of course at £59 they may well have run out by now.
