Rose, I'm sure you are aware that the full winter upgrade, in addition to the fridge vent covers, requires a woolly hat, scarf, gloves and thick socks.
Thermal underwear is an optional extra

Woolly hat, scarf, gloves and thick socks at the ready. But PB don't really want 4 pairs of winter draws on________ . Everyone would accuse me of having Botox." />
And I'd need a bigger van.

Re: Fridge vent covers
I have a 2010 AS Devon and just looking through AS Owners Manual, Section 3, Page 3-2, Section: Before Moving Off, No 21, The fridge vent covers should be fitted when the vehicle is to be driven to comply with European Type Approval regulations for vehicle external projections. I don't see any projections to protect, I have never fitted mine before,
They are not referred to as winter covers or am I on the wrong track. Any Comments

Re: Fridge vent covers
I've never read that section of any of the handbooks nor heard of that being a requirement from any other source.
The only thing I can think of is that the vent itself is a slight projection from the face of the body and that when the vehicle was submitted for approval the covers were on.
The statement appears to be in all of the handbooks, even those for a van with a Thetford fridge that doesn't come with vent covers.

Re: Fridge vent covers
Could be due to the "hot" vent outlet? Except that my covers don't cover that bit.

Re: Fridge vent covers
In my view this means that the normal louvred "vent covers" must be fitted - ie don't drive around with two gaping holes in the side of your van that could potentially trap a limb or other thing as you drove by. No, a hole does not project but the wall around does for anything that is foolish or unfortunate enough to get the into the hole!
It cannot possibly refer to winter covers as their absence (my manual says "available from your dealer") would invalidate Type Approval!
In southern Spain you often see vans with the louvred vents removed to assist fridge performance. Personally, I prefer a small fan!

Re: Fridge vent covers
Ron, that sounds about right. It's interesting on your last point that, after many articles on DIY fan kits for fridges, Thetford now offer one as an accessory. As with my point in the OP on winter covers, if the performance of the equipment is dependant on needing a fan, why are they not provided as standard?

I completely agree with you regarding vent winter covers and fans. With the need for extra fans, it does suggest the Thetford fridge in newer vans is 'not fit for purpose' outside of the U.K., in say Southern Europe!! But I do have to say we didn't have any problems in Slovenia earlier this year when the outside temperatures reached 40 degrees centigrade! Perhaps the van being under the shade of a tree helped.

Re: Fridge vent covers
Ive fitted fans to our fridge inlet vent due to over heating issues and the top above the fridge warping whilst abroad for a few weeks in temp 28 to 34 deg C. Southern France.
Fitted a thermo couple at the air outlet and the controller was then calibrated to turn on and off the single and dual stage fan control. This firstly kept the temp down to avoid damage and secondly reduced our gas consumption by over 50%.
As an engineer I know fitting a controller and thermocuple was maybe a tad OTT rather than a fan with a switch but it also helped conserve battery power. We run 2x110amp batteries with a 80w solar panel

Re: Fridge vent covers
The fridges work perfectly well without a fan. However, in really hot conditions they will work more efficiently with a thermostatic fan. Since not everybody goes to Southern Spain why force everybody to pay for an accessory that a minority need. The same applies to winter covers - I use them for protection during the winter only.Askit wrote:Ron, that sounds about right. I perceive that this forum is getting a lot of posts lately from folk looking for a free lunch. That used to be the position of another forum that is principally populated by moaners. Please don't let this forum degenerate in that way.
I don't know if A/S monitor it but, if they do, it will cease to influence them if it is used just as a way to publicise grievances.
Sorry - rant over!

Re: Fridge vent covers
Hi all!
Regarding vents, as I mentioned before, we did notice when we were at the NEC show in October that a new 2016 AS Broadway EB had grey vent covers in position on the the two fridge vents, so perhaps they are now standard. I think vents are useful to keep the cold weather out, and also the water out when washing the 'beast'! I have purchased the cheaper cream Thetford covers as John originally suggested on another thread, and they look great. Easy to put on and take off.
We also purchased an extra bin for the Thetford fridge door. This has been positioned at the top the door to take even more yogurt!! There is still plenty of room at the bottom for the milk and that bottle of wine or two!!
Thanks to John (artheytrate) in Benidorm for the cream fridge vents suggestion. Hope you have sorted out your fridge door problem.
This morning we woke up to cold weather with a sprinkling of snow. Our van on our drive is now nice and cosy, though I will be buying an oil filled radiator soon! Hopefully we will be away again in January.
Happy travelling to you all
