Inherited a Campervan
We are really lucky and have inherited a 1995 symbol. We had money saved for this years holiday and, as we will now be going away somewhere in the UK in her, we think we should now invest some of this money in having her looked over. We know the MOT is fine until October, tyres are in good condition, the cambelt already changed and the interior is in very good condition and seems to be all there.
Should we simply have her serviced to start with and see what they say? Do you recommend using a Peugeot dealer? We are in South Devon.
Any other recommendations. We are soooooooooooooooo excited, I can't tell you!

Re: Inherited a Campervan
I would certainly have a habitation check done on it for peace of mind.
Good inheritance that which I am sure will give you a lot of pleasure, and take you to places you'd never thought of

Re: Inherited a Campervan
Hi, well done and hope you get many hours of enjoyment from your new second home!
You mention the tyres are in good condition, however it is worth checking the date code on them as it is generally recommended that they are changed after 5-7 years maximum even if lots of tread left, as the tyre walls can deteriorate more with being stood idle in the open air. This is not necessarily evident on visual inspection so for safety's sake may be worth getting them checked for age.
Happy camping!
cheers
Roger

Hi their and a big welcome to the forum
Agree with what the others say and personally I would not use a main 'stealer' as you will pay way over the top. Find a good local garage that has the competence for that make of vehicle. The people who did the last service/MOT/cam belt change would be a good start if local.
Have a great time in it

Re: Inherited a Campervan
We should devise a sticky Checklist for the forum, so that new or potential owners can check all the little 'usual suspects' to make sure that everything works.
There's nothing so annoying as getting on site, at home or abroad, and finding that something doesn't work and could have easily been fixed if you'd spotted it at home.
From another thread where I just posted this:
In the habitation:
Check that all the appliances work, heater and water heater on both gas and electricity.
Check that the fridge igniter is working properly and that it stops when the fridge lights on gas.
Check that the water pump runs and then stops when it reaches pressure. Also check that both Hot and Cold taps deliver a smooth water flow without coughing and spluttering.
Check the toilet flush pump works and that the toilet blade is opening/closing.
Check all the lights are working.
Check oven/hob/grill/igniter working.
Do the usual checks on the cab, tyres, spare, lights, MOT and advisories, clutch, engine oil, etc etc etc.
Most of all, good luck and enjoy your new motorhome, wherever it takes you.

Re: Inherited a Campervan
Lucky you! check the jack etc. Oil the jack and work it up and down so you dont have to struggle in the dark and wet if you ever need to. Find out where the jacking points are. Put a good torch in the van.
Wave at other autosleepers!

There is already a pre-delivery checklist in the fact sheet section.

Re: Inherited a Campervan
Knowing where the jacking points are is a very good idea. Even as a vehicle mech I had to check the book to see where mine were and there are several variants so not something to be trying to find on the side of the motorway in a downpour (which is the only time I ever seem to have any problems ).

Hi and welcome to this very useful and entertaining forum! I totally agree with Jaytee that main dealers are mostly to be avoided ,not sure where you are in Devon but if you anywhere near Plymouth, Vospers the Peugeot dealer , are definitely one to miss! Happy motorhoming Regards Paul

Re: Inherited a Campervan
Hi & welcome,
When we first got our Harmony back I asked my local garage to do a nut and bolts service- if it moves etc .....
Make sure you ask for a gearbox service and get the scuttle water evacuation pipe replaced with the longer left hand drive version (part no. P00006448L6) as water will likely have been dripping onto the gearbox making gear changes a bit stiff. The water can then be directed away from the g/box.
Hab service is a must, particularly the gas hose as an out of date one will be probably be brittle and porous and dangerous.
Once you get out and about you'll never look back !

Re: Inherited a Campervan
I would highly recommend that Auto-Sleepers service centre at Willersey, Broadway in the Cotswolds does the habitation service. The engineers in the service centre have worked for A/S for many years and some used to be on the production line in the manufacturing plant so they know these vehicles inside out. They do a thorough check and I also believe they service the base vehicles as well. They offer overnight stays with complementary EHU and there is also a caravan club site at Broadway which is handy for a few days in the Cotswolds. Enjoy your camper and get yourself over to France.
