Trackers
I am about to take delivery of a warwick xl but my insurers say I must have a tracker fitted. Anyone have any recommendations or advice on what to avoid. Many thanks

Re: Trackers
i am surprised that an ins co insist on a tracker being fitted. Have you tried a different insurer as they will not all insist one is fitted.

Re: Trackers
Many insurers insist on tracker if motorhome over £50k value and it should be Thatcham approved.

Re: Trackers
We have just insured our new van (kemerton ) and got quite a few quotes . Most insisted that a thatcham alarm be fitted. We had one fitted before the van left our supplier. It cost three hundred and forty four pounds. Its a thatcham cobra one. It doesn't have a tracker.

Hi
My insurers would'nt insure me without a Tracker. I used this company to fit it. Can,t say if the system is good or not seeing you don't know it's there.

Re: Trackers
Offering an extra discount for fitting a tracker would be fair enough; but if 'my insurers' tried to insist on something like that, they would no longer be 'my insurers'.

Re: Trackers
The trackers A/S fit you have to text them every time you move off, not much good if like me you live in an area with a poor mobile signal. Plus if you are abroad there is the cost of continually texting you are the person in tracked vehicle. I kicked it into touch and fitted a Cat one alarm, my insurance company were ok with that.

tracker
We bought a new Warwick XL last September and had the dealer[Simpsons Gt Yarmouth] fit a phantom tracker . We are insured with Saga and anything under £60000 does,nt qualify for a discount. But they certainly did,nt insist on us having one.

Re: Trackers
I was asked to fit a tracker for my Warwick Duo if the value was above £50k which it was just. They were quite happy for me to declare the value as £49,999 and so avoid paying out £500 or so for the tracker.

Re: Trackers
We had to have a Tracker installed on our Stratford when it was new (Mar 12) as due to insurance companies refusing to cover due to postcode and value. They weren't interested in alarm at all.
They never asked on the previous Duetto though.

Re: Trackers
Intresting topic... have never heard of a tracker being compulsory before... wouldn't a vehicle have to "Be Stolen" for a tracker to become effective? At least an alarm is a deterent to the vehicle actually being taken in the first place. (Maybe I'm missing something? Usually the case)

Re: Trackers
Just received some quotes to insure our Warwick XL, which should be arriving just after Easter, with the Camping and Caravan club. They do not require a tracker - although I believe they offer a discount if one is fitted.
The online quote, with 4 years NCD, and no motorhome experience came in at about £470
I will call them when I have a delivery date to see what they can do on this.... I have full NCD on my other vehicles, so may be able to get a slightly better discount, but that was the max you could do online - it said to call if you had more.

Just tried for a quote from Stavely ahead - they clearly don't want to cover new vans!

Re: Trackers
I suppose the idea of the Tracker from the insurance point of view is that theft OF the van is far more costly than a theft FROM the van.
No one here would bother if the alarm went off to be honest anyway, and the van thieves would just break in the house for the key anyway.

Re: Trackers
Just renewed my 2014 van with the CC, they only required that a wheel clamp be fitted when the van was left un-attended.
Alarms / Trackers gave an additional discount but were end user optional.
For peace of mind we had a alarm installed since this was a one off installation fee as apposed to a tracker that was renewable.
Interesting enough the CC didnt give any additional discount for keeping the van on a gold rated CaSSOA registered storage site, was quoted the same cost if I had parked it outside my house on a public highway.
Insurance is an enigma

Re: Trackers
Regarding trackers:
Our van has a tracker fitted, but we haven't paid the subscription fee, so it isn't working.
I'd be cautious about having one, because of stories like the one where a 30K caravan was stolen by travellers and, because the tracker provided its current location, the ins co wouldn't pay out, and the police couldn't recover it because there were children living in it.
If I did fit a tracker, it would be one of these:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
because they're sophisticated and easily hidden.
One problem with GPS trackers is that thieves commonly use cheap GPS jammers, plugged into the cigar lighter, to prevent the device working. For this reason, I'd always install a GPS tracker like the one above into the bodyshell somewhere as far away from the cab as possible.

Re: Trackers
Looks a nice bit of kit. Dad has something similar but a lot smaller on his walking stick. Once you have been sent a message by it that it has moved off you send it a text to ask for its current position. Using a giffgaff sim its very cheap to run. Even cheaper if you have giffgaff in your phone as well.

Re: Trackers
There are other types of Tracker that don't rely solely on Gps and sim cards, and employ another type of communication.
However they cost a fortune. Then there is installation on top, then annual or lifetime subscription.

They are radio transmitters and rely on the vehicle passing a base station or being picked up by a police vehicle equipped to recieve it. With the proliferation of gps and sim types I dont expect they will be supported much longer. There seems to be less and less vehicles stolen except for very high value or those stolen with keys due to new immobilisation techniques. Older types like my Transit Flair are easier prey.
