Fitted or flat sheets?
Hi
We need to buy a new sheet for our 96 Symphony (Bertie) as we want to use the bed longways using all the cushions, rather than crossways. (My OH is tall and started finding crossways a bit cramped.) Currently Bertie is having a service so we can't measure the bed but want to get on with buying a sheet!
What size sheets do others use and do you go for fitted or flat?
Thank you!
Penny.

We don't, we use two kingsize sleeping bags zipped together.

Use Duvalays less hassle and comfortable.

Re: Fitted or flat sheets?
To avoid all the scraped knuckles and exercise involved in using a sheet we have always used mattress toppers ( used to be feather and down and now an Argos memory foam 1 inch thick one ) slipped into a cotton sheet sleeping bag liner. Those, unrolled on the bed with a duvet or two above, are very quick to set up and put away. Taking off the sheet sleeping bag liner for washing is a bit more of a faff than removing a sheet but it does not have to be done every day.
Single or double duvet covers make an excellent substitute for the sheet sleeping bag liner but we just happened to have two handy.

We use a 2 inch memory foam topper with a fitted sheet. We only take the sheet off when it needs changing. Each morning we roll the topper up tight with the sheet still on it and pull the roll tight with luggage straps. It then goes in the Symbols over cab locker with the duvet and pillows (tight squeeze but all part of the routine).

Re: Fitted or flat sheets?
Thank you so much for all your interesting replies! I'm now rethinking whether we need a new sheet at all and maybe get a duvet cover or sleeping bag liner to put our memory foam topper into. Does anyone know if the bed is 6'6" square when its made up with the spare cushions?

In the boat we used a duvet for ourselves and sleeping bags for visitors. In the motorhome we use sleeping bags for ourselves.
My sister-in-law is a whiz with a sewing machine and twelve years ago she sewed up six double sheets from John Lewis to produce 2 x single and 2 x double sleeping bag liners.
They are still in use and on hot, hot nights a sheet over you is all you need.
Best regards,

They are a lot of money Frank there's no denying, but when I say I wouldn't be without mine it speaks for it's self... Tried sleeping bags and there's no comparison... The Duvalay is sheer luxury, not only comfortable but snug too... Quality doesn't come cheap... but I'd urge people to try them for themselves before writing them off over cost... At the end of the day it's not any more than a set of silver screens and people don't suggest they are over priced do they?

Re: Fitted or flat sheets?
I resisted Duvalays due to cost for years but after waking every morning with aching back/hips I thought of a mattress topper but decided to try a Duvalay if I could find one secondhand on EBay. I found one that came with both a 4.5 tog and a 10 tog duvet. I've only tried it with the 4.5 duvet and have to admit I now have a good nights sleep. Keeping my eyes open for another now for the OH. I'm convinced but agree they are definitely over-priced for what they are. I know someone who is good with a sewing machine would be able to make their own much cheaper. If memory serves me correctly, I'm sure someone on the forum made their own.

Re: Fitted or flat sheets?
Hi
I have made my own version and they are working well. The main design flaw is my feet tend to stick out the end especially if we have not got Doris level. I am sure Duvaleys will not have that problem. l made my own because I had sheets and duvet covers that did not fit our new bed. I already had bought a memory foam topper duvet and had a duvet. If you have to buy sheeting, memory foam and duvets it will not be cheap for good quality.
Since I made them we have found making the bed much easier at night we unroll them and the bed is ready. They are easier to store as two rolls instead of the one long roll of memory foam plus the duvet.

How much space do the Duvalays take up when not being used - and where do you store them in the van?
We had a look at some at one of the shows - and they looked rather bulky.

Re: Fitted or flat sheets?
As we only have the one (OH still has sleeping bag) I just fold it in half and put in up in the luton which has plenty of room left for sleeping bag and pillows. If I bothered, they can be rolled up pretty tightly, probably to a diameter of 12" or so. Duvalay state on their website that the thinnest topper with the lightest duvet rolls to 36cm x 66cm. They come with wide elastic straps to hold them rolled up as in this pic

Fold in half and they fit in the luton, leaving plenty of room for other things, I have also made my own, for my MH sent the instructions to a couple of members.
Duvalays we have the originals in the caravan, are left on the single beds, expensive probably, but worth every penny, once bought you have them .

Re: Fitted or flat sheets?
I roll them up tightly. When you buy from new, they come with huge elastic bands which hold them tightly curled. I also invested in a bag for each of them, and it was money well spent. they and their pillows fit exactly into the space under the rear seat in our Legend. (They would fit in the Luton if we didn't have that space, though)
Having lived for years on a boat, we have tried every combination of sheets, duvets, foam toppers, sleeping bags etc, and we are totally in love with our Duvalays...The duvet stays on, your feet stay inside, you don't catch your toenails on zips, you can still wriggle around and put bits of you outside to cool off if you get too warm.... My husband wasn't sure they would be the right thing for us, but one night convinced him!
