Oh how I agree!

My problem (Grumpy Old Man that I am) is that I reckon that half the stuff fitted nowadays was not really needed in the first place!

As an Operations Supervisor in the Oil & Gas industry many years ago I got the job of inducting wet-behind-the-ears Engineers when they first joined the Company. I had a standard speech that went:

"In the next month I will teach you that there are two four o'clocks; one when you are looking forward to going home and the other one when you feel like death warmed up.

When you are allowed to design something please design it for the second four o'clock and please make sure that it works perfectly or doesn't work at all. If it works perfectly I will be happy and if it doesn't work at all I can get it changed.

However, what we operations people hate is something that we have to 'twiddle' four or five times every shift for the next twenty years because some stupid Engineer couldn't get it right in the first place!"

I then used to let them try and calibrate a particular level controller on the Plant that has managed to defy the best brains in the business for the last 40 years! (It's still there - set on "Manual" and adjusted by hand once or twice every shift!)

Am I off topic again?

Best regards,

A lone pilot in a hot air balloon gets temporarily lost, he lowers the balloon groundwards towards a man walking a dog. Shouting down he asks 'Hey, can you tell me where i am please? The dog walker shouts back 'Your floating 20' above the ground in a red hot air balloon' The pilot shouts back 'You must be an engineer' 'How did you guess? asks the dog walker. 'Well' says the pilot 'I am encountering a little local difficulty, i ask for some information and you merely state the bl**d**g obvious' 'Well' says the dog walker 'You must be a manager. 'How did you know that? asks the pilot, the dog walker replies... 'I see you're in trouble, you ask for my advice - which I freely give, it doesn't solve your problem so it's all my fault'

I was in the oil industry too Dutto...

Rich,

It took Design Engineers three years to design the "unsinkable" Titanic.

It took Construction Engineers three years to build the "unsinkable" Titanic.

It took Operators three weeks to sink the Titanic.

I rest my case!
