Symbol Engine oil pressure light flashing
I have a Symbol 2011 120 bhp model and on every start up the red Oil pressure warning light flashes for about 30 seconds before going out. Having looked at the handbook, it shows it as a deterioration of the engine oil.
The vehicle had a service just over 12 months ago with a oil/filter change and has covered approx 2500 miles since then.
Is the red light based on time or distance travelled, as this is a low mileage for an oil change ?
I intend to change the oil/filter myself anyway, but after changing the oil/filter will the light automatically go out, or will it need resetting, based on the fact that I have already tried a reset using the brake/accelerator pushed down together with the ignition on and this does not work ?

Re: Symbol Engine oil pressure light flashing
There appears to be 3 main reasons for the flashing oil can warning light: firstly low oil, low oil pressure and then deterioration of the engine oil. I have suffered this and have had everything checked successfully but my annual oil change invariably solves the problem.

Re: Symbol Engine oil pressure light flashing
I have checked the oil level, which is fine. The van drives perfectly, and the oil light does not flash when driving, only on start up, so I guess an oil change will sort this, but I need to know if any resetting is required once I change the oil/filter.

Changing oil and filter worked for me, no resetting was necessary, hope this helps.

Many thanks. I will try changing the oil in the next week or so, and see if this cures the flashing. Any idea if it auto resets to a further year before flashing again, rather than mileage ??

Not absolutely sure as it appears random to me. I have had the van 8 years and it has happened twice. The oil is changed every year regardless of mileage and the first time it occurred it reset itself after a few engine restarts. The second time everything was checked including oil pressure and an oil change fixed the issue. Touch wood it is behaving itself at the moment.

Re: Symbol Engine oil pressure light flashing
I have finally got round to changing the Oil/Filter. I have started the vehicle a couple of times, but it still flashes for about 30 secs. Today I drove about 8 miles and then tried restarting and guess what, it STILL flashes. The engine is fine and uses no oil. It seems to show a service count down (592 miles) on the readout when the red light is flashing which drops as I use the vehicle.
Anyone know if this service interval can be manually reset on this 2011 model ?

I had the flashing on my 2010, my mechanic cleared it with his scanner. If you plug an OBD2 scanner in a Boxer , chances are the 'passenger air bag off' light comes on and you have to manually switch that on again . It's a common glitch.

Tried the reset method, but there is NO trip button on my 2011. Tried various other resets found on line, but no joy. It looks like I am going to have to get someone to put a scanner on and reset it, which will be a pain everytime I change the oil..

it might be worth buying a midrange scanner of your own. The days of Chinese OBD readers being so cheap that they are almost giving them away may be over, but they are not too expensive still - IIRC Aldi and Lidl occasionally stock them, and their products are typically good quality.

I couldn’t get that link for the reset procedure to work, but i have previously reset my service interval mileage when I change the oil using the clutch and brake pedal method. But this is always done before I get any flashing reminders. Have you tried that method?

Re: Symbol Engine oil pressure light flashing
The brake and clutch pedal method never worked for me, that's why I went to my mechanic.

It's usually brake and throttle pedal in most cars??? Anyone agree? Or disagree?

Re: Symbol Engine oil pressure light flashing
Tried both Brake and Clutch and Brake and Throttle methods, none of them work. I have an OBD code reader, but that will only read/delete codes. As far as I am aware it will need a diagnostic scanner plugged into the OBD port to clear this. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skjMUGvUgWs. This seems to confirm that the Brake/Throttle method does not always work and a scanner is required, and a scanner is going to be a lot more expensive that a Code reader to buy.

You could go to the garage that did your last oil change and tell them that they obviously didn't reset it.

They are over 130 miles away, so I will not be going all the way back to get it reset.

Whilst in France over the last few weeks the yellow spanner sign popped up and stayed on.
When I passed the service mileage countdown the yellow spanner sign disappeared, but I still have the red oil light flashing on start up for about 30 secs, so will just put up with it until I service it again in 12 months.
