Is this to be expected?
Hi all,
I just bought my first camper, a 'retro' Renault Trafic autosleeper, with a 1700 petrol engine which has done 100,000 miles and passed an MOT. First trip, and we're annoying everyone else on the road as the van does a noisily complaining smelly 50mph after taking about 5 minutes to start, and drinking more than half a tankful on a 60 mile round trip.
Have I bought a dodgy vehicle with a knackered engine or is this just par for the course and I've been spoilt by driving modern diesels?
be honest (but gentle) with me!

hello
I can't help but my 1984 1900cc petrol VW did about 20 mpg. Not quite half a tank in 60 miles but not far off.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
I'll not say that your van has knackered engine, but it is certainly not running as it should.
Hopefully Richard will be along shortly as he has a van similar to yours and should be able to tell you what you should expect to get in both performance and consumption.
I believe that the problems you are experiencing [apart from smell] could be the timing belt being incorrectly timed.
What model is it BTW? Recro, Rimini, Rapport?
