Reversing Sensor
Hi,My wife would like to drive the van and i think it would be a good idea if i fitted a Reversing Sensor(it has worked so far on the car)
Has anyone ideas,if poss i don't want to drill holes in the van,not sure if there is such a thing also if it was wireless that would be good.

Re: Reversing Sensor
We had ours fitted by Conrad Anderson in Birmingham when they were also fitting the cruise control. The reversing sensors are fitted in the rear bumper and they did all the concealed wiring. We were advised at the time that wireless ones were susceptible to interference/poor operation, especially on a 20' long motorhome where the distance between sensor and receiver is greater than on a car.
However, newer units may have improved.
Incidentally, we gained a further discount on our Safeguard insurance who now offer this if reversing cameras or sensors are fitted.

Re: Reversing Sensor
I can find loads of wireless kits on EBay but none that don't require drilling. I'm sure there used to be ones that clamped to the bottom edge of the bumper or even stick,-on sensors but can' t find any now.

Re: Reversing Sensor
...on a tiny Fiat 500 they look ridiculous, but on a M/H they are one of the more worthwhile extras.....the small circles don't look too obtrusive, especially when the bumper isn't white....sometimes it's easy to forget that in order to work properly they need to be kept clean.

Re: Reversing Sensor
I had them on my Topaz, certainly didn`t look ridiculous, they were colour coded to my bumpers, they were the VW ones wired in rear and front, the rear came on when in reverse the front I had a switch on the dash board so I could choose when to have them on.
Wired more reliable than wireless, no good doing a reverse then you lose the signal an accident waiting to happen.
Usually you get a drill bit the right size in with the kit, I didn`t go for the cheap ones as I had to pay someone to fit them and they were guaranteed, cheap could be dearer in the long run, my moto is pay once .

Re: Reversing Sensor
If it's a van conversion then drilling is inevitable. I fitted sensors to an earlier VWT4 Topaz and also to a Renault Master Timberland conversion. In the VW it required hole drilling in the bumper and in the Renault the sensors were located in a plastic trim across the doors. Both sensor kits included a hole saw of the appropriate diameter and a good instruction sheet.
All the wiring can be kept to within a foot or so of the rear of the vehicle. Power is picked up from a reversing light on either side of the van. The central control box can be located in a suitably located cavity/cupboard close to the rear and the alarm unit is usually loud enough to be heard when located also near to the rear. The door mounted sensors were more difficult as the wire from each sensor had to be fed up behind the door lining to the point where the flexible wiring connection between door and van body was located.
Technically not difficult, but you need to plan the cable routes carefully before you decide whether to DIY and claim the bragging rights !! Question is, which is in short supply- money or time?

Re: Reversing Sensor
I fitted a set of Dolphin (the best) to my VW B7 Passat variant, absolute doddle to fit, & they work great, didn't need them on the van as I have a camera high up on the roof looking down on the bike rack/box.
